The study of mountains, Orology is a specialized branch of Geology, though the term is mostly replaced by "Mountain studies".[citation needed] A common misconception, and one that is perpetuated in English dictionaries, is that 'Alp' means high mountain. This is not the case. An Alp is the upland pasture in between high mountains, not the peak itself.
